Lampwork Bead Tassel Tutorial
Here are some simple instructions on how I make a tassel and how I add a lampwork bead to it to attached to bookmarks, cell phones, keychains etc. It's fun and easy and only takes about 10 minutes to complete.
Here's a list of what I use.
2 - 2 inch earring cards
2 - Small spring clamps
1 - 6 in strand of nylon coated steel cord (7 strand)
Small thread scissors
Size 20 Tapestry needle
Embroidery floss
Lampwork bead, (or any bead with a 3/32" hole)
Bead caps (optional)
Start by winding the floss around the 2 inch earring card.
I usually wrap about 12 times to give me a nice slender fringed tassel.
But, if you want a thicker one, just wrap more times around.
Hold tight and snip the end.
Clamp the floss ends to the earring card to hold all the strands together.
Next, cut a 12 inch strand of floss and feed it under all the strands
and pull to the edge of the card and even the ends of the strand.
(If you want your tassel to hang longer, add a few more inches
to the strand)
With both strands together, make a loose knot.
With the other small spring clamp, clamp the end to the other
earring card matching the loose ends to the edge of the card.
With the eye end of the tapestry needle, pull the loop
to the edge of the card.
Pull the knot to the the edge of the card.
Snug the knot tight.
Remove the knotted strand from the card and pull the
strand around so as to hide the knot under the strands
that are wound around the first earring card.
Completely hide the knot under the strands.
Carefully remove all the strands from the card
and clamp the side with the hidden knot.
Cut an 8 inch strand of floss and tie a knot around
all the strands, close to the edge of the clamp.
Flip the clamp over and make one more knot.
Pull tight.
Fold the nylon coated steel cord in half to make a loop
to use as a needle threader for the tapestry needle
and pull the loop through the eye of the needle.
Thread one of the ends of the 8 inch strand
through the loop to thread the needle.
Pull the needle through about 1-1/2 inches.
Remove the clamp. Then, take the tapestry needle
and tuck it under the knot that you just made with the
8 inch strand. Pull the strand through.
Do the same with the other end of the 8 inch strand.
Take your bent nylon coated steel cord and loop the
top part of tassle strand though.
This will make it easier to thread your beads through.
Tread a bead cap, a lampwork bead, and another
bead cap though.
(You can add more beads and findings if you want.)
Make a loose knot with the remaining strand of the
top part of the tassel.
Insert the tapestry needle through the loop.
Grip the tapestry needle and the strand and pull tight
to secure the knot close to the bead cap.
Insert your open thread scissors through all the
loops of the fringe part of the tassel and cut as
evenly as you can.
You get better results if you cut them all at once.
Trim all the strands evenly.
I do it like my beautician does it with my hair.
Your tassel is done!
Now all you have to do is decide where to attach it.
Here are some ideas. A Bookmark, Cell phone and Keychain ring.
Have Fun!!!
